3 hospitalized after multi-vehicle accident

A woman was seriously hurt in a motor vehicle accident on Aug. 21. According to police, the motor vehicle accident occurred in Omaha, Nebraska, on Veterans Memorial Bridge around 5:00 p.m. when the 18-year-old's GMC Sierra crashed into a sport-utility vehicle and a semitrailer.

Authorities said the teen crossed into oncoming traffic on the Missouri River span of the bridge and collided with a Jeep Liberty then a Kenworth tractor-trailer. Police did not indicate whether or not any of the drivers involved in the accident were cited.

The truck driver, 46, complained of shoulder pain and was treated at Creighton University Medical Center then released. The 49-year-old Omaha resident who was driving the Jeep Liberty was also taken to Creighton and released after being treated for back pain. The 18-year-old woman suffered a number of injuries that included a femoral fracture, dislocated hip, broken pelvis and lacerated spleen. She was hospitalized at Nebraska Medical Center. Police reported that her injuries were not life-threatening.

In personal injury lawsuits, accident reconstruction specialists are sometimes consulted by attorneys to assist with demonstrating the specific events that took place prior to and during a car crash. That information along with evidence gathered from a police report and witness statements could allow a plaintiff's attorney to establish a defendant's negligence in the eyes of a civil trial's jury. From there, the lawyer for the plaintiff would also have to convince the jury that those negligent actions caused the accident. In Nebraska, a verdict in favor of a personal injury case's plaintiff could yield compensation for both economic and noneconomic losses.
