2-car crash kills 1, injures 4 in rural Nebraska

On Sept. 12 around 7 p.m., a two-car crash occurred at the corner of 835th Avenue and Highway 15 south of Pilger in Stanton County. According to the Stanton County sheriff, a 25-year-old Battle Creek man ran a stop sign and drove into the path of a Wayne man's vehicle that was headed northbound. The two vehicles collided, and the Battle Creek man's vehicle rolled into a ditch.

A 25-year-old male passenger of the vehicle in the ditch was extricated and transported to Norfolk for treatment at Faith Regional Health Services. He was later pronounced dead. Another 25-year-old male passenger in that vehicle was ejected and suffered critical injuries. He was hospitalized in Omaha. Both drivers and one other passenger were transported to the hospital but have been reported as expected to survive.

Highway 15 was shut down for two hours during the car accident investigation process. The driver of the vehicle that ran the stop sign was cited for driving while intoxicated, and Stanton County deputies stated that additional charges might be filed before long.

When someone dies in a crash caused by someone else's negligent or reckless action, such as driving while intoxicated, the individual's family members will likely experience economic hardship while they try to grieve for their loss. These hardships could be due to the decedent's medical bills, emergency transportation costs, final expenses and the loss of any income that the decedent provided. These and other accident-related damages could be recoverable via a wrongful death claim against the at-fault party.
