Intersection accidents involving red light runners

Many Nebraska road users are killed or injured each year in intersection accidents. These accidents are particularly dangerous as they often occur at high speeds and provide drivers with little or no time to take evasive action. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that 97 percent of motorists feel that red light runners are a persistent threat, and about a third of the people surveyed by researchers with Old Dominion University in 1999 said that they knew an individual personally who had been injured or killed by a motorist who had run a red light.

Decline in car accident deaths

According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nebraska residents have a much greater chance of dying from heart disease than from car accidents. Data that was gathered about the 2.6 million U.S. deaths that occurred in 2013 showed that about one in every 77 people died in a car accident while one in every four people died from heart disease.

Liability issues with autonomous cars

The idea of self-driving cars traveling around Nebraska may sound like science fiction, but the truth is, autonomous cars are almost here. In California, Florida, Nevada and Michigan, car makers have permission to test autonomous cars on public roads. A self-driving car called Google Car can be seen regularly traveling around the roads in Silicon Valley.

Porsche faces lawsuit in Paul Walker death

Many Nebraska residents heard about the death of actor Paul Walker in a car crash in 2013. Walker and a friend were killed when the Porsche that his friend was driving went out of control. His daughter has filed a lawsuit against Porsche alleging that the car did not contain the safety features that would be expected on a car of this type.

The dangers of driving in fog or smoke

A screen of fog obscuring the road can be a well-known hazard in Nebraska. Not only are accidents more common when there are misty, smoky or foggy conditions, but the specific types of accidents that happen change. For example, fatal multi-car pileups are much more likely when weather conditions render it difficult to see the road.
