Car accident spinal injuries

Many Nebraska drivers have suffered injuries as the result of a car accident. Of these injuries, injuries to the spine are among the most serious. The spine plays a critical role in physical movement and overall health. A car accident that causes serious injury to the spine can have long-lasting effects that drastically alter the course of a person's life.

There are many different types of spinal injuries. A flexion fracture can occur when the spine is compressed, causing certain parts of the vertebrae to crack. An extension fracture can occur in a vehicle collision when a passenger is thrown forward while being restrained by a seat belt. This can cause the spine to overextend and actually pull the vertebrae apart.

A rotation fraction is less common but still very serious. This type of spinal injury can occur when a person's upper body is rotated too far out of its normal movement range. The rotation can cause compression of the spine or dislocation of vertebrae.

Treatments for spinal injuries can vary widely based on the type and severity of the injury. In serious cases, surgery may be required to remove broken bone fragments or to realign dislocated vertebrae. A medical brace or cast may be used to facilitate a properly healed fracture. Some patients may undergo an intense physical therapy regimen to aid in their recovery.

Car accidents can cost a huge amount financially, but the loss in quality of life can be just as painful. A lawyer may be able to help an injured driver obtain financial compensation. If a lawyer can demonstrate the negligence of another driver using evidence from the scene of the crash, the court may order compensation to be paid to the injured driver.
